What does it mean when a Blackberry is “Unlocked”?

Question by Chris J: What does it when a is “”?
I am wanting to get a Blackberry storm. I’ve had the Razr V3 for almost 3 years so i”m looking for an upgrade. My service is T-mobile btw. Anyways, I was shopping around on the internet and some sites like ebay would say something like….”Blackberry Storm “UNLOCKED”” what does that unlocked mean exactly. and is it helpful or necessary? Thanks

That means it will work with any service. It is originally a Verizon phone, so now it will work with AT&T, T-mobile, and other companies with sims cards..

that means you can take your old phone sim card and put it in your new phone and it can work because its unlocked..but usually verizon uses CDMA and not GSM network.

but the new blackberry storm has it and its unlocked so you can do it if you want.

Technically the blackberry is a verizon phone but now that it is unlocked, as you say, you can use it with any CDMA service plan. I think the only one available for CDMA other than verizon is t-mobile. I know that U.S. cellular and sprint are GSM phones and if you want to switch your plan to those you need to insert a sim card and do this in secrecy. If the companies can tell that you aren’t using one of their phones they can make it so that it does not work and will want you to buy one of their own phones for prophet. If you want to change carriers, buy a sim card. Easily found on ebay.
